Joe LevasseurLighting Designer / Artist

Levasseur is a frequent collaborator and regular audience member of the contemporary performing arts. His work with experimental dance artists often includes intense analysis of the space in which the performance will happen and an attempt to find a specifically revised aesthetic functionality within the given venue. These collaborations seek a gently supportive design employing a deep cognizance of of the space, time, and the format of the art.
His lighting has been described as "magical," "delicate," and "relentless." Working with dozens of the most beloved dance artists of the new century, Levasseur has been involved in hundreds of performances, creating and implementing designs which put him at the forefront of the contemporary genre, netting him a Bessie Award in 2008.

Not surprisingly, Levasseur is no stranger at Performance Space 122, the East Village hotbed of live art - he has designed shows there for choreographers such as Maria Hassabi, LeeSaar The Company, Sarah Michelson, Robbins Childs, Palissimo, among many more. He is also the lighting designer for Ishmael Houston-Jone’s THEM, subsequently premiering on October 21st.

Conceived to be a lobby-lounge as well as a gallery, the space will be open from 7PM to the public as well as patrons before and after each performance taking place in the upstairs.

The work shown in this collection will represent the wide variety of visual art that Levasseur has created in the past five years. From abstract landscapes, to work directly influenced by the choreographers with whom he has collaborated, Levasseur's paintings shed light on this medium in a way that only a lighting designer can. All of the work is available for sale through the artist.

FOR MORE INFORMATION or a price list, please contact Joe Levasseur at joelevasseur@earthlink.net

Website: www.joelevasseur.com
Website: www.ps122.org
